In 1852, Charles Naudin published an article in the "Revue Horticole" praising the close link between botany and horticulture. In his opinion, the horticulturists of his day were particularly interested in the "moral des plantes", which looks at the morphological and physiological characteristics that go beyond the ornamental value of plants, and he found something philosophical in this feeling. Odd as it may seem, the complementary of botany and horticulture was not obvious in the 18th and 19th centuries. Three horticultural practices in particular provided botanists with food for thought : the introduction of exotic species in European gardens, the search for new forms through hybridization, and the selection of vegetal monstrosities.
